In one determined stroke as a means of tackling the issue of food loss, the United Arab Emirates has also stepped up its efforts in fighting food loss and waste through a national awareness campaign.
The national food awareness campaign, which is now being launched across the UAE, aims to deal with the challenges posed by food waste. It is part of a broader plan in the country to cut down food loss by 50 percent by 2030 in line with the Sustainable Development Agenda Resolution, which strives to maintain sustainability throughout the world.
The campaign which is spearheaded by ne’ma – National Food Loss and Waste Initiative aims at raising the public’s understanding of the impact of food waste on the economy and the environment. It focuses on the need for individuals and businesses to manage their consumption more effectively and sustainably in the areas of food resources.
It is estimated that over a quarter of the food grown or manufactured within the U.A.E is disposed of during food preparation or sale which leads to dangerous processes for the environment and revenue losses. The campaign seeks to change the mindset and present practices of residents and organizations towards sustainability and resource efficiency by creating educational and social messages and values.
Civic education, volunteer events and collaborations with local industries form the core of the initiative for implementing effective measures to curb food wastages. Technological development and innovative approaches are also presented in the campaign as ways of reducing food wastages during the entire supply chain.
This approach is also proactive and goes hand in hand with UAE’s strategy towards mitigating environmental effects while promoting growth. In tackling food waste, the country strives to advance its food security, curtail greenhouse gases emissions, and provide a better world for everyone.
To achieve this, residents and businesses are encouraged to join the campaign by endorsing practices including proper meal planning, purchasing only what’s necessary and handling food surplus via donations or upcycling. Together, their efforts are seen as critical to the success of the campaign initiatives and the sustainability of the country’s resources.
In these means, the UAE once again proves its focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility and plays an exemplary role for many countries in the war on food waste worldwide.
