DEWA’s EV Initiative Powers 195 Million Kilometres with Clean Energy

In a major milestone for Dubai’s journey toward sustainable mobility, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has revealed that its Green Charger initiative has provided more than 39,159 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity to power electric vehicles (EVs) across the emirate since 2015. This clean energy has enabled EVs to collectively travel 195 million kilometres, reinforcing Dubai’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing environmentally conscious transportation.

According to Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, usage of DEWA’s EV Green Chargers surged by 23.6% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This spike reflects the increasing public embrace of green mobility in line with both the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030.

“By promoting green transport, we’re not only lowering emissions but also enhancing the UAE’s global competitiveness in the electric vehicle sector,” Al Tayer stated.

The momentum has been building steadily: from just 14 registered EV users in 2015 to over 20,900 by Q1 2025, with more than 39,000 EVs currently on Dubai’s roads—a 5.41% increase year-on-year. This growth reflects both public awareness and institutional efforts to support cleaner alternatives.

DEWA’s charging infrastructure now includes more than 1,100 charging points, strategically placed across Dubai through its own network and in collaboration with licensed charge point operators (CPOs). The initiative offers four types of EV chargers: ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box, catering to various user needs.

The ease of access is a major plus: EV owners can locate chargers through DEWA’s smart app, website, and 14 digital platforms, while registration with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) automatically activates a DEWA Green Charger account. Even unregistered users can take advantage of the infrastructure via a convenient guest mode feature.

Public sentiment is also shifting in favor of EVs. A recent Toluna survey revealed that 73% of UAE residents would prefer to buy electric vehicles—highlighting a strong appetite for sustainable transport options.

As Dubai forges ahead with its climate goals, initiatives like DEWA’s Green Charger are proving pivotal. By combining smart infrastructure with user-centric design and long-term vision, the emirate is not just keeping pace with global trends—it’s setting the benchmark.
