In an effort to improve the environment, Dubai commenced a new phase of its extensive reef project focusing on the rehabilitation of the marine ecosystem around the emirate. The first phase includes the deployment of around 1,000 artificial reefs built to suit the shapes and forms of the turbulent waters along the coastal areas of the map. It is the first step of a detailed program intended to increase marine life and assist local fisheries activities.
For the next 4 years, Dubai Reef plans to deploy a total of 20,000 reef modules covering a space of 600 square kilometres. These structures are intended to replicate features observed in natural reef systems which provide a home to fish, crustaceans and molluscs amongst other types of marine organisms. The undertaking is expected to assist in the rehabilitation of coral reef habitats, coastal areas and the restoration of marine ecosystems along the foreshore of Dubai.
In addition to the creation of usable marine habitats, fish populations are also expected to increase due to the artificial reefs hence contributing to sustainable fishing and food security in the UAE. Meanwhile, the project is also consistent with Dubai’s strategic objectives such as the increased efforts in transitioning towards negative emissions, as the reefs are anticipated to sequester more than seven million tonnes of carbon on an annual basis.
Dubai reef is a project that aims to engage multiple partners and stakeholders across both the public and private enterprises. DET is spearheading the initiative together with partners such as DECCA, Dubai Chambers, PCFC and Nakheel.
This partnership shines a light on Dubai’s devotion towards environmental and eco-friendly practices.
The development of the project will result in provision of employment opportunities, provide attraction for marine leisure activities and sustainable means of food in a manner that is in line with UAE’s food security strategy. Dubai Reef project is a clear indication of the commitment of the people and authorities of Dubai in ensuring that the natural environment of Dubai is safeguarded while development and sustainability is achieved.
