UAE Residents Anticipate Extended Eid al-Fitr Holiday in 2025

Ramadan

UAE residents are preparing for a potential extended holiday during Eid al-Fitr in 2025.

As per the UAE Cabinet’s Resolution No. (27) of 2024 regarding official holidays, the Eid al-Fitr holiday encompasses the first, second, and third days of Shawwal. The exact duration of the holiday, however, hinges on the lunar sighting, which will determine the start of Shawwal. The official announcement will be made after the moon is observed on the evening of Saturday, March 29, 2025.

Potential Scenarios for the 2025 Eid al-Fitr Holiday:

  • If the Moon is Sighted on March 29: Should the crescent moon be visible on the evening of Saturday, March 29, Eid al-Fitr would commence on Sunday, March 30. Consequently, the official holiday would span from Sunday to Tuesday, allowing residents a four-day break from Saturday to Tuesday.

  • If the Moon is Not Sighted on March 29: In the event that the crescent moon is not observed on that evening, Ramadan would extend to 30 days, making Monday, March 31, the first day of Eid. This scenario would result in the official holiday extending from Saturday to Wednesday, providing a five-day break for residents.

Astronomical Predictions:

According to calculations from the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research in Egypt, the Shawwal crescent is expected to be born on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 1:00 PM Cairo time. The crescent is anticipated to remain visible after sunset in most Arab countries, suggesting that Eid al-Fitr is likely to begin on Sunday, March 30. However, the UAE relies on official moon-sighting committees to confirm the start of Shawwal. Therefore, the final dates for the holiday will be officially announced on the evening of March 29, 2025, following the lunar observation.

This potential extended holiday offers residents an excellent opportunity to plan family gatherings, local trips, or simply enjoy a restful break. As always, it’s advisable to await the official announcement before finalizing any plans.
