Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that 65% of the upgrade works at the World Trade Centre roundabout have been completed, noting that construction is moving ahead of the original schedule. The project is part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow and make daily commuting smoother across the city.
The roundabout is considered one of Dubai’s most critical intersections, linking Sheikh Zayed Road with five key corridors: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, Sheikh Rashid Road, 2nd of December Street, Zabeel Palace Street, and Al Majlis Street. The development also forms part of a wider plan that includes improvements to Al Mustaqbal Street.
Major traffic improvements expected
According to the RTA, the project will significantly boost the intersection’s capacity while reducing average delays from around 12 minutes to just 90 seconds. Travel time for motorists heading from Sheikh Zayed Road to Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street is expected to drop from six minutes to just one minute, making journeys faster and more efficient.
Serving key districts
The upgraded intersection will benefit several major areas, including the Dubai World Trade Centre, one of the region’s leading venues for international exhibitions and events, as well as the Dubai International Financial Centre. It will also serve residential and commercial neighborhoods such as Zabeel, Al Satwa, Al Karama, Al Jafiliya, and Al Mankhool.
More than half a million residents and visitors are expected to benefit from the project, underlining its importance to Dubai’s growing urban landscape.
Bridge works progressing
As part of the development, three out of five planned bridges have already been opened. Among them is a main flyover stretching 1,000 meters, consisting of two lanes with a capacity of up to 3,000 vehicles per hour. This bridge supports traffic moving from Sheikh Zayed Road toward Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street, connecting onward to Karama and Deira.
Work is still ongoing on two additional bridges that will carry traffic from Sheikh Rashid Road and Al Majlis Street toward 2nd of December Street. These are expected to open in October.
The project reflects Dubai’s continued investment in infrastructure, aimed at keeping pace with rapid growth while improving mobility and overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
