Dubai continues to strengthen its position in global trade and investment, with DP World emerging as one of the leading investors in free zones worldwide. The Dubai-based group’s investment commitments in new projects reached $3.32 billion between 2021 and 2025, according to data from fDi Markets, which tracks new foreign direct investment projects.
Figures highlighted in an fDi Intelligence report placed DP World among the most prominent multinational companies from emerging markets investing in free zones. The group recorded 11 investment projects over the five-year period, reflecting the growing role of UAE companies in developing economic and logistics infrastructure and supporting international trade.
Dubai also secured a place among the world’s top 10 cities for hosting the headquarters of parent companies driving investment in free zones. Companies headquartered in the emirate were linked to 54 investment projects worldwide, led by 42 parent companies.
DP World Among the Leading Global Free Zone Investors
DP World has reinforced its standing among the largest free zone investors from emerging markets, joining Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power and Aramco as prominent companies directing investment into the sector internationally.
Together, the three companies recorded investment commitments of approximately $17.43 billion across 18 projects between 2021 and 2025. The figures highlight the expanding role of companies based in emerging economies in developing economic zones and driving investment activity around the world.
DP World holds a distinctive position in this market because its operations extend beyond investing in free zones. The company is also involved in developing these zones and operating related businesses, while maintaining a direct presence within them.
This combination of activities draws on the group’s extensive experience in port operations, logistics services, international trade, and supply chain management.
Its broad range of operations allows DP World to expand its presence in international markets while contributing to the development of integrated economic environments that facilitate the movement of goods and help businesses reach new markets.
Free Zone Investment Commitments Exceed $76 Billion
Globally, figures from fDi Markets show that free zones continue to attract considerable interest from multinational companies. Between 2021 and 2025, 87 companies announced at least three direct investment projects each in free zones around the world.
Their combined investment commitments exceeded $76 billion across 357 projects, highlighting the scale of investment activity in these zones and their growing importance to industrial, commercial, and logistics operations.
The data focused on companies demonstrating sustained investment activity through multiple projects. Individual investments considered speculative were excluded to provide a clearer picture of the most active and consistent international investors in the sector.
Among companies from developed markets, Taiwan’s Foxconn, Germany’s Siemens Energy, and U.S.-based Intel stood out as major investors. Together, they accounted for $20.38 billion in investment commitments across 15 projects.
These figures underline the importance of free zones in the international expansion strategies of major corporations. They also show how companies from emerging markets, including the UAE, are becoming increasingly active alongside established global businesses.
